How to Create A Glow Effect
how to create a glow effect in gimp.
by molly. so, anastasia wanted to know how to make something glow on gimp. there’s a few different ways to do this. //before you start -have a signature with a render in it that’s ready to edit. -make sure the render or text is on a layer separate from the other layers in the signature and has a transparent background (though the signature itself doesn’t have to be transparent). -open your layers dialog (CTRL+L or windows > dockable dialogs > layers) //option un this option makes a pretty soft glow effect, and i like it, but i tend to use the second one more. i’ve got this nevershoutnever signature that i made a while ago, and i think the render needs something to make it stand out, so i’m gonna add a glow. first you need to duplicate the layer with the render or text on it. right click on the duplicate layer and pick Alpha To Selection. go to edit > shrink selection and pick a number from 1 to 3. the higher it is, the more intense the glow is. now go to edit > cut. this is now our outline layer. make a new layer and do an alpha selection on our outline layer. fill our new layer with white, and delete the original outline layer. duplicate the new outline layer a few times and filters > blur > gaussian blur them. i’m going to do 2, but only because i don’t want it to be too intense. the first one i blurred by 5, and the second by 10. after that, you’re done! here’s my final result, which, admittedly, doesn't look all that good. it looks a lot better if you use the effect on a signature and render that isn't so small. //option deux this can be a little more intense, and it’s quite similar to a drop shadow. i’ve got a plain little signature, but i think i’ll add something more..err...snazzy to it. so alpha to selection your text/render, then create a new layer and name it “glow”, then place it under your render layer. go to edit > grow selection and grow it by 1 (you can grow it by more, if you want it to be more intense, or you can actually not grow it at all). now fill it with white, or whatever color you want your glow to be. go to select > none. you can stop right here and settle with a nice border, but if you want it to be a glow, go to filters > blur > gaussian blur and blur it by 5-10. if it’s a huge image (and i mean huge, like 1680x1050, wallpaper size), then blur it by more and grow it by more so it’s more noticeable. now you’re done! final product. hope this helped. if you need any further help or instructions, just tell me. (:

there's not much you can do about it. you just have to be really patient with it and practice. i suggest zooming in on the image to about 200% or 300% and cutting it out pixel by pixel. it takes a long time, but be patient and it'll be worth it.

those are really cool. i like the lens flares and supernova effects. i always want to make space scenes, but i never do. have you thought about maybe taking a soft circle brush and using that with white to make stars, and possibly gaussian blurring some a little?
