Anyone read the original Peter Pan?
I was wondering if anyone has ever read the original Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie? It has been a long time since I have read it but I plan on reading it again soon. It was and always will be one of my favorite books.

My daughter just received an "abridged" version of the original for her birthday. It's only 131 pages. We'll probably read it together.

I am glad a few people have read it. I love to read the originals and see how they vary from the movies. Most times the books are better. Most but not all. I think I like Disney's version of Peter pan better.

I have a very old copy of the book "Peter & Wendy" from a garage sale. 1 of my favorite treasured books. There is a movie about J M Barrie, Johnny Depp plays Barrie it is very good, can't recall the name right now...

I have it and love it to pieces! I plan on finding an old hardbound copy of it, for nostalgia's sake. =3
Did anyone else cry at the end?...in the epilogue?...

The only good thing about Di$ney's treatment of Pan was the original design of Tinkerbug, and over the years they have milked that character for all it's worth, and then some. I must admit that Hans Conried's Hook was also really well done. The part of Hook in the film of the same name as played by Dustin Hoffman stinks by comparison.
The original books are out of copyright, and if you want etext versions I put them up so you can download them here: If you are interested in non-Di$ney treatments of Pan, you should check out the 2003 live action film. It was the first time that they used a real child in the part of Pan on film. The 1960 TV production of Peter Pan with Mary Martin is now available on DVD. There is no question that hers was the best portrayal of that role. Someone already mentioned the Depp bio-pic Finding Neverland, which is worth a look. Moving back to print, there is a wonderful sequel to Pan, very much PG-13 though, Peter Pan in Scarlet. It is the only sequel to Pan authorised by the copyright holder, the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children (GOSH). Speaking of GOSH, it brings up how wonderfully evil Di$ney is when it comes to Pan. GOSH was granted perpetual right to collect royalties on Pan by an act of parliament. By law, GOSH is supposed to get royalties from works that derive from Pan, including the game that this site supports. Di$ney has chosen to break that law, and try to fight it, even though the principle of perpetual copyright is exactly what Di$ney has been fighting FOR in the USofA. Seems that they only like laws that benefit them, and are happy to steal money from a CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL when it suits them. How wonderfully EVIL! I love it! -ekb-

Since I was a little bunny
I always thought evil was funny You get a burn when days are sunny Stung by bees, collecting honey Pay taxes when earning money Slapped with rulers by teachers nunny Groan at jokes with punchlines punny Spill breakfast when the eggs are runny Get soaking wet fishing for tunny Young lads hate to be called sonny Jack Dempsey was knocked out by Tunney So there it is, that's why I'm Evil Be glad my last name's not Knievel Since bad things come when seeking good You'd start with evil if you could -ekb- Last edited by Fairy Hoppins; 03-14-2009 at 07:32 AM. |
