December 2016 Contest - Holiday Traditions
December is a month full of various holidays from around the world! Every holiday has an event, meal or idea that is shared each year and has become a tradition for generations. However, sometimes families place their own spin on a tradition and that is when the fun begins. This month we want to hear about the fun or not so fun things your family does each year on the holiday of your choice. Share your story in this thread before the New Year's Eve ball finishes its drop and you will be awarded with this shiny award. Can't wait to read all the entries and to share my own story.

My family celebrates Christmas, but we have our own fun traditions we've adopted over the years. Like making a gingerbread house! My dad usually gets help with the design (from my sister and I), and each year we challenge ourselves to make a new, interesting house. Luckily, with the frosting "cement" recipe we found a few years ago, anything we make can stick together wonderfully, giving us all sorts of freedom with our houses! We also love going downtown to watch A Christmas Carol being performed each year. And on Christmas Eve, we have a huge dinner of lasagna and go out for a walk to see all the Christmas lights everyone's put up around the neighborhood.
This year will be extra fun because we have family flying out from California that we haven't seen in a while. My sister and I have been thinking about taking the cousins out to our elementary school to go sledding down the huge hill and to shoot Estes rockets out by the football fields (our middle school was right next door to the elementary school, so there's a ton of wide open "sport" space in between them.) It's gonna be great, if only we can get a foot or two more of snow to make things perfect!!

My family's joy every Christmas is our little angel, my sister's daughter. We usually just gather around to eat cakes or cookies and talk and have fun togother. My sisters give my parents gifts, it was really fun. And the little niece would always be the attention drawer, everything she does makes us laugh so much and that's all the joy we need for Christmas. Sometimes we go out for dinner, too. But no matter what we do on Christmas, as long as we're together, everything is joy to me ^^

Wow, what you've all shared so far sounds lovely. Glad to hear everyone enjoys spending time with their family.
Due to our seasons being quite different in our part of the world, more often than not we're celebrating Christmas and New Year's out in the park with a picnic or BBQ. Always done at the last minute, my mum and I decorate the Christmas tree in the lounge. Many of the toys have been with us for years, so they are always a great reminder of childhood (some have even been brought with us all the way from Russia). Another usual thing we do is avoid the mad rush to the shops and make many of our gift purchases after New Year's, seeing as we celebrate Christmas on 7th January.

We normally leave our tree up until January 6th. We use the same ornaments every year and we get some new ones too. Today I had to get my tonsils taken out, so I don't really feel like doing much.

My mom's birthday is early December our Holiday Traditions start there. We go to a place in the downtown area that just has trees all decorated, we love guessing the topic of each tree. Some are Disney, they had a Moana, Narina and Tangled tree this year, along with an Elf, Minion and little red riding hood tree among others. Then we walk along downtown looking at all of the Christmas decorations and then make our way to Macy's to look at there windows and the Holiday Lane floor full of holiday ornaments, my mom always buys a few new ornaments for the tree.

Me and my sister have the same small space decorated with the same things. We have a little food and watch TV. Not much but it is something to do as there is nobody but us left in the family.

On Christmas Day, we always open our "socks" (stockings) first before any other gifts. Also, like PixieHollowForever, we leave the tree up until Jan. 6th.

Large or small, it sounds like everyone has a wonderful holiday. I loved reading everyone's traditions.
Our tradition is that I cook a great big meal for way more that will ever show up LOL My daughter and her family come over for dinner and gift exchange. We also leave our trip up until the 6th of January or even later depending on my free time (I wonder if I can convince the hubs to leave it up all year ).
