Writing Help

Ok, first of all, I know most stuff in this forum is art, but it also says creativity, and I think writing falls under that category. Second, I need help with writing. It's not that I don't have ideas, it's just that It's hard for me to think up very much to write, and it can be hard for me to find the right words to express what I want to say. Does anyone know some way to help?

I think reading different styles of books helps a little.

Can you find a book in the library with photos and writing ideas for practice?

Do you think you have trouble making the characters? Or what happens in the story? Or where the story takes place?

I don't know if I can help, I have so many stories in my head and I can't write them down fast enough.

There's the age-old saying "Write what you know", which I actually have not found that helpful. It feels like a thorn in my side, I just find it annoying. What I 'know' isn't that interesting. I have read fairy tales and mythology all my life, with a splash of mystery, so all of that are in my books. But can someone honesty say I'm writing what I know? I like to make things up and go from there. Did Lewis Carroll know the Jabberwocky? I suppose he could have known it through some nightmare or person he knew.

Which brings me to what inspires my own stories: dreams I have at night, where sometimes I wake up and don't recall the dream but it leaves me with a sense of adventure. I also get ideas from the computer games that I play (I like RPG games where you're free to explore and discover); cartoon shows (mainly Japanese ones); movies; and my greatest fantasies, like gardens - I love gardens so much because there are so many out there, from rose gardens to maze gardens, to ruined gardens in a castle.

My advice would be: "Write what you love."

If you love sports, write about that.
If you love camping, write about that.
If you love animals, write about that.
If you love space, write about that.

If you aren't sure on the facts about something you like, do a little research - then you'll be writing about what you love and know.

Characters are fun. Although I think some of mine are starting to get recycled... I usually create a character based on their look first, or a name that I like. One of my favorite book series that I'm writing, I wanted a character with pink hair. I see so many in anime that have pink hair, so I wanted my own; as silly as that sounds. Then I gave her a name and a personality that fit her: a goofy, love-struck teenager learning to be a sorceress.

Did I ramble?

Whenever I hit a wall in my writing, I usually write whatever I want
to, not what I need to. Basically, you open up a new page/document/whatever-you-use-to-write-on, and pretend someone is saying "Have at it!" It can be as random as you want; it doesn't even have to make sense!

Once while doing this I write down me and one of my characters arguing over what the plot was going to be. I got rid of writers block, and he got some character development- it was a win-win!

Or, if you're having trouble with starting off a chapter or even the whole story, I find that 'random first line' generators help with that. Sometimes I can find a first line I like, and a whole plot can develop from there!
