A Fairy Cottage

It doesn't take much to make a fairy feel at home. For this cozy cottage, an empty cracker or pasta box is fitted with a craft stick door and topped with a paper leaf roof. Then its ready to finish off with pintsize details, such as a dangling doorbell, a chimney with cotton "smoke," and paper patio stones.

You'll need:
  • Empty cracker box (or similar cardboard box)
  • Craft knife
  • Scissors
  • 4 wooden craft sticks
  • 2 pipe cleaners
  • Glue dots
  • 2 flat buttons and 1 shank-style button
  • Pushpin
  • Paper or silk flower
  • Thin ribbon or string
  • Small bell
  • Template for A Fairy Cottage
  • 3 small paper cups (5-ounce size)
  • Stapler
  • Craft or s****book paper (shades of green for the roof leaves and brown or beige for the patio stones)
  • Cotton ball or cotton batting
  • Corrugated cardboard
Instructions:
1. Use the craft knife (adults only) to cut a 4-by 2-inch door opening in the front panel of the box.
2. Create a door by setting the four craft sticks side-by-side and bending pipe cleaners around the tops and bottoms to hold them together, as shown.

3. Now attach the door to the box. Use a pushpin to poke hinge holes in the cardboard alongside the door opening, aligning them with the pipe cleaners on the door. For each hinge, thread one of the adjacent pipe cleaner ends through the hole and then twist the two ends together and trim them short, as shown. Top the hinges with buttons, and glue the flower to the face of the door.

4. For a doorbell, tie a small bell to one end of a short length of ribbon or string. Tie the other end of the ribbon to the loop of a shank-style button. Use a glue dot to stick the button in place beside the door.

5. Print out the template and use it to cut out a bunch of green paper leaves. Crease each leaf down the center to give it more shape.
6. Turn one of the paper cups upside down and cut out the bottom. Staple paper leaves to the cup bottom, as shown, overlapping and layering them to create a full conical roof.

7. For a chimney, cut off and discard the upper two thirds of another paper cup. Notch the cut edge of the remaining portion of the cup, and then invert the cup, as shown. For smoke, cut an X in the cup bottom, and insert a cotton ball or a bit of batting. Glue the chimney to the top of the roof.

8. To attach the roof to the cottage, notch the top of the third paper cup and then glue the cup to the box top, as shown.

9. Cut a piece of corrugated cardboard into the shape of a cutting board (if you have a small cutting board, you can trace around it).
10. Glue the cottage to the end of the cardboard cutting board.
11. Finally, glue on a pathway of paper patio stones leading to the cottage door.

Mint Tin Bed

Your young fairy fan will have a blast furnishing this little bitty bedroom. Once she makes the bed, she can create a setting for it by using an open file folder placed on edge for walls and a colorful sheet of craft paper for a floor. She can even top a building block bedside table with a wooden bead flower vase.

You'll need:
  • Empty mint tin
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Glue dots
  • Stickers
  • Fabric s****s
  • Gauze pad
Instructions:
1. Trace around the mint tin onto corrugated cardboard. Cut out the tracing.

2. Measure 1 inches from one of the short ends of the cardboard and mark a line. Cut the cardboard along the line so that you end up with two pieces: the larger one to serve as a headboard and the smaller one for a footboard.

3. Glue the headboard upright against one end of the tin and the footboard against the opposite end. Then have your child decorate them with stickers.

4. For a sheet and a bedspread, cut out matching rectangles (roughly 4- by 3-inches) from white fabric and colored or printed fabric. Stack the two pieces and turn over the top edge, using your fingertips to press the fold. Drape the sheet and spread over the mint tin and secure them in place with a few glue dots.

5. For the finishing touch, fold the gauze pad into a mini pillow, using glue dots to hold the shape if needed, and prop it against the headboard.

Fairy Pots and Pans

Of all the fairies, the tinker talent fairies have an extraordinary knack for using odds and ends in the most useful ways. For example, in the right hands, a handful of copper end caps and/or plastic leg tips (sold in most hardware or home supply stores) are the makings for a whole pantry full of fairy cookware. And a package of tiny cork pads can be magically transformed into a tray of tiny chocolate chip cookies.

You'll need:
  • Assorted copper end caps (1/2 to 1 inch size) *
  • Small white plastic leg tips (3/4-inch size works well)
  • Flexible craft wire
  • Glue dots
  • Buttons
  • Small pony beads or similar size beads
  • Small package of 1/2-inch cork pads
  • Brown marker
  • Aluminum foil (or a small piece cut from a disposable aluminum pan)
  • Paper clip
  • Small piece of plastic from the recycling bin
* These are the caps that fit over the ends of copper pipes

Instructions:
1. To make a saucepan, use a 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch copper end cap for the pot and a shank-style button for a lid. For a handle, bend one end of a 12-inch length of craft wire into an S-shape (about 1 1/2 inches long), as shown.

2. Then wind the long end of the wire around the bent portion, keeping the coils close together.

3. Stop about 1/4 inch from the bottom and trim the wire ends even.

4. Bend the wire ends at a 90-degree angle and glue them firmly to the side of the pot.

5. For an enamel pot, use a plastic leg tip, and create a handle out of black craft wire as described in step one. Create a cover by gluing a small bead atop a white button.

6. For a Dutch oven-style pot, use a 1-inch end cap. For each handle, twist two short lengths of wire together and then shape them as shown.

7. Glue the handles firmly to the pot.

8. To make a tray of chocolate chip cookies, use a sheet of 1/2-inch cork pads. Leave them right on the paper they come on (it will resemble parchment paper). Use a brown marker to draw on chocolate chips. For a baking tray, cut a rectangle out of foil that is slightly larger than the sheet of cookies and fold over the edges.

9. For a mini spatula, bend a paper clip as shown. Then cut a small spatula shape from recyclable plastic and glue it to the end of the paper clip.
