The Misfit Pixie (A FAIRY Tale)

My big story I was working on closed and was sent to the archives whilst I was inactive for a bit. So I've decided to write a new story in Pixie Hollow based off a popular folk tale. Hope you like it!

The Misfit Pixie
Once upon a time, there was a fairy named Rhubarb Greenmint. She had short, messy, ruby red hair and dusty green eyes. She was a Tinker Talent, and proud of it. She had a respectable amount of fairy friends, and a respectable amount of frenemies. Rhubarb was almost as quirky as Clank and Bobble, and tinkering new items for pixies was her pride and joy. All in all, Rhubarb had a pretty sweet life.

That was apt to change.

Chapter 1
One day, Rhubarb woke up and naturally, did the one thing she did first in the morning: tinker. Rhubarb grabbed her stone hammer, a piece of driftwood, a pouch of bumblebee yellow dye, and a few nuts and bolts. She began to tinker when all of a sudden, she heard a knock at the door.
"Come in!" Rhubarb's gravelly voice drifted from inside. "I'm in the back."
Her friend Lemony came in and stood beside Rhubarb's tinkering desk.
"You're late." She huffed.
"For what? Oh...not the Tinker Fairy picnic!" Rhubarb looked up.
"Yes! Now we have to go! They're about to announce the invention of the year!" Lemony looked down at her with her baby blue eyes.
"I'm not going- I have to finish tinkering this!"
"You can do it later, come ON!" Lemony sighed.
"Fine. But I'm only agreeing since I want to see if I get the invention of the year." Rhubarb said stiffly. She walked over to her trunk of inventions and pulled out some of her personal best. A contraption that gets dye out of berries. A nut pulverizer. A squirrel translator, something that rather resembled a talking caterpillar. All of these, she stuffed into a leaf bag and bustle out the door, trying to keep up with Lemony.

When they arrived at the picnic, Rhubarb, waved goodby to Lemony as she scrambled to the stage, watching Lemony join the crowd. Rhubarb stopped as she got to the invention sign up table. The table was made out of a green mushroom, perfect for the Tinker Talents! A grim looking Sparrowman sat behind it, looking as if he'd rather be watching dye dry.
"Hello!" Rhubarb chirped. "I hope it's not to late to sign up!"
"As a matter of fact, it IS!" He spat. "A helpful hint for next year: DON'T BE HALF AN HOUR LATE!"
"Now Timber!" Said a stern, but sweet voice. Fairy Mary popped out from behind the stage, carrying a tray of inventions. "She has plenty of time to sign up and prepare for her presentation. Let her enter!" Fairy Mary glared at Timber.
"Fine! Whatever. Sign this form!" Timber pushed a leaf paper at Rhubarb, who swiftly filled it out.
"Done!" Rhubarb smiled and handed it to Timber.
"K. You're right after..." He looked down at a list. "Flax Whiteseed."
"Okay thank you!" Rhubarb bubbled, and dashed off backstage, eager to present her inventions.

After twenty minutes, Flax stepped off the stage and Tinkerbell called her name.
"And here is Rhubarb Greenmint with several inventions from her line 'Making Pixie Life Easier'"
Rhubarb bursted onstage with a tray of her inventions, grinning from ear to ear. She placed the tray gingerly on a mushroom table and folded her hands, facing the crowd of Tinker Talents.
"Uh hi! I'm Rhubarb and I'm here to show you a few of my many inventions!" She picked up the berry squasher.
"I call this the Berry Button!" Rhubarb explained, picking up a raspberry. "Just place the berry in the cup, flick the lever," A squishing sound came from the cup. "And TA DA! It comes out juice!" The juice went through a wooden funnel and into a bowl at the bottom. Rhubarb picked up the bowl and tilted it to show the crowd. "I'm sure Daisy could really use this!" She told everyone.

After a few more inventions that seemed quite worthy of winning the best invention title, Rhubarb picked up the fake caterpillar.
"Now this last one is a real crowd pleaser!" She laughed. "It will help you when you're feeling lonely! I call it... THE BUG BUDDY!" Rhubarb revealed the wooden caterpillar, smiling. "Just press a button and it'll talk to you!" Rhubarb pushed a button and you could hear a magical loop of Rhubarb's voice saying things like, "Hi, pal!" Or "Let's be friends."
"So, what do you think?" Rhubarb asked a fairy sitting in the front row. "Wouldn't you want one?"
"No!" Said the little fairy, who could've been a new fairy. "It doesn't talk to you, it just says random stuff!" The crowd murmured its agreement.
"Now hang on there, just a minute!" Rhubarb said, starting to get angry. "I actually had to trade a JEWEL to get this voice thingy. It washed up on the shores from the Mainland and this dude said it was his, but he'd give it to me for a jewel. So I did!" Rhubarb pouted. "It wasn't cheap!"
"Cheap or not, I don't want one!" Said an annoyed voice.
"Yeah!" Yelled a few other pixies.
"But, but!" Rhubarb started.
"Thank you for sharing Rhubarb!" Said Tink, kindly. "Next is Yasmine Toadstone!"
Before she could say anything, her inventions were carried off and a hand grabbed her offstage.

Chapter 2
"Wait! Hang on!" Rhubarb hissed, "I wasn't done, yet!"
"Doesn't matter!" The grouchy Sparrowman, Timber, rolled his eyes.
"It does, too!" Rhubarb protested, "My inventions would've won, had I finished explaining them to the judges!"
"You were not going to win. Your inventions were rubbish." Timber scowled. Rhubarb opened her mouth in fury, but decided better of it. At that moment, Lemony fluttered up.
"Lemony! Can you tell this sour plum over here that my inventions WERE a showstopper?" Rhubarb pointed at Timber.
"Nice job, Rhubarb!" Lemony snickered. "Everyone loved it! Not!"
"Wait- Lemony! What...why are you being so..."
"Realistic?" Lemony finished the sentence. "Come ON, Barb, they were quite useless."
"They were NOT!" Rhubarb screamed. "The Berry Button would change lives!"
"For better or for worse?" Lemony smirked.
"Stop it stop it STOP IT!" Rhubarb yelled. "I don't care. Ill make more inventions. Ones that could beat your acorn washer any old time! Now... I have to go. They're announcing the winner of the best invention." Rhubarb dashed off, with tears in her eyes.

"And the winner of this year's best invention is..." Tink stood on the stage, reading from a leaf. "... Flax Whiteseed!" Flax stumbled onto the stage, proudly showing her Bird Bites (Healthy treats for little peeps!) to the crowd.
"No..." Rhubarb whispered to herself. "I had it in the bag!"
"Nice caterpillar, BARBIE!" jeered a Sparrowman named Coal.
Rhubarb grimaced. Barbie was a toy doll that occasionally washed up on Lost Things Beach, a ways away from Palm Tree Cove. The doll wore lots of weird dyes on her face and looked very odd in terms of being a fairy. For one thing, the doll lacked wings, which led everyone to believe they were based off humans.

That night, Rhubarb sat alone in her room, the moonlight pouring in through the little window.
"I would've won..." Rhubarb whispered. "But they just didn't get it!" She turned her head to the window and sighed.Lucky Flax. Her invention was actually understood and liked. Bird Bites. Why didn't I think of that? Rhubarb thought.
All of a sudden, there was a loud rapping at the door. Rhubarb jumped in her mushroom seat.
"Lemony! Go away!" She cried. There was silence. Then more rapping. "I said go away!" Rhubarb said, getting frustrated. More silence. Then a low, raspy voice said,
"It's not Lemony."

Thank you, Jenny!

Chapter 3
Rhubarb reared herself away from the window, puzzled.
"Who else could it be?" She muttered. Rhubarb fluttered to the door and opened it. There, in the moonlight, stood the one and only Vidia.
"Pots and kettles!" Rhubarb exclaimed. "Vidia, what are you doing here?"
"I came to check on you," Vidia said shortly. "See if you were okay."
"Why wouldn't I be okay?" Rhubarb shifted her weight, nervously. "I just didn't win the invention contest. It's no biggie."
"Oh yes it is!" Vidia nodded her head, making her long ponytail bob. "I can only speak for myself..." She started, pacing to the right of Rhubarb's porch. "As I am the Fast Flying Talent mentor, after all!" She grinned to herself. "But pixies have a need to win! It's in their blood, for Ree's sake!"
"Um, do you want to come in?" Rhubarb interrupted, noticing that this was clearly going to be a long speech.
"Yeah, fine, whatever!" Vidia sauntered inside Rhubarb's house. "As I was saying, we want to win! Why do you think we have all those contests, huh?" Vidia looked Rhubarb in the eye, intimidatingly. "WHY do we have contests? WHY do we have the Animal Derby? The Pixie Hollow Games? Huh, HUH? Well, do you know? I SAID DO YOU KNOW!!" Vidia was practically shouting at this point. If she kept up like this, she'd wake up Rhubarb's whole neighborhood.
"Because we want to win..." Rhubarb said quietly.
"EXACTLY. So that's why it's a big deal you didn't win. YOU HAVE TO WIN!" Vidia raised her arms high in the air like she was holing a trophy.
"Thank you, Vidia," Rhubarb began, cautiously, "But as you said, you can only speak for yourself; a Fast Flying talent. You guys are all about winning. I'm a Tinker. I tinker." Rhubarb said, simply.
"Oh, darling, you are making this dreadfully confusing!" Vidia laid a hand on Rhubarb's shoulder. Like you weren't either! Rhubarb thought.
"Vidia. I appreciate the help; I really do. But I'm not your talent, so maybe I'll do my thing and you'll do yours." Rhubarb said.
"Whatever!" Vidia said sourly and dashed off.

Rhubarb sighed. Some good that did. Vidia's theory on fairies was far from the truth. Fast Flying talents liked to win. Others didn't really care. She poured out a satchel full of the inventions she had shown at the contest.
"Useless!" She whispered to herself, examining them with care. She then shoved them back into the bag and pushed it under her bed made out of an old, shallow wooden box from the Mainland. Then, she grabbed a piece of cloth and spread it out on her tinkering table. There, she placed a pouch of pixie dust, a few diamonds, a map of Neverland, a handful of berries and wrapped them carefully into a leaf parcel, and her leaf journal. She tied them all up into a knapsack and was about to leave when she remembered something. She reached under her bed an pulled out the satchel once more. Digging through, she found her Bug Buddy and took it out, putting the bag in its place once more.
"I can't forget you." She whispered to the caterpillar. "Even though everyone says you're useless, I still need the company." With that, Rhubarb flittered out of her house and shut her door, locking it. She swung the knapsack onto her shoulder and placed the Bug Buddy in her shirt pocket. Rhubarb flew down the path, passing other pixies' houses filled with warm lights and happiness. Sighing, Rhubarb adjusted her sack and kept flying.

As she got to the end of the path, Rhubarb saw Lemony's house a few houses down. Fighting the urge to knock on her door and give her a good kick to the knee, she flew past as though no one she used to care about lived there.
